Our Story

All our lives we have been inspired by our joyful mother who always found the silver lining and made sure her family and friends did too.

Our mission is to share this happy-go-lucky girl’s optimistic spirit with you. While she had many reasons to be down – as we all do – she always chose the rose colored glasses and the cup not just half-full but overflowing. She was her happiest when also making others happy and in that spirit we launch Society of Joy Spreaders.

Be a joy spreader with us!

nancy-kingNancy King – I am a passionate Landscape Architect who enjoys art, design, science and the sculpting of outdoor space to better connect people to nature and our surroundings. I think a strong connection to nature and the world around us is just as important as having a strong social connection to the people in our lives.

In 2003, I started my career in landscape architecture (www.seventyacres.com) motivated by a desire to discover a profession that I could practice for the rest of my life and improve the lives of people and the environment at the same time. After the sudden loss of our amazing mother, Suzy and I, seeking an outlet for our grief, focused our energies on our Happy Go Lucky Girl website. With Mom as our inspiration, we created the website as a source of information to learn about how to harness specific skills to lead and share joyful lives – making the world a better place, one smile at a time. Our mother made it look easy, but we now know that it was a skill she developed over her lifetime.

I live in Redding, Connecticut with my husband and our four Happy Go Lucky cats.

As a Joy Spreader, I am a work in progress!

suzy-berschbackSuzy Berschback – I am a passionate author, artist, public relations expert and community advocate. In 2008 I accepted a position that coincidentally uses all of my professional and social skills in public relations as a community affairs manager for one of the largest hospital systems in the Metro Detroit region.

The mission of SOJS started after my mother’s passing as a way to help deal with my grieving process. Over the years, my vocation and avocation have become beautifully intertwined.

In my professional role, I listen to my community and continue to hear the need for stress coping strategies as a result of our busy daily lives. I hear from all ages and walks of life. We all need to learn about available techniques to cope with our life’s stressors. I know this is not unique to my community. It is our goal at SOJS to make people aware that we can all learn stress coping skills and create a community of like-minded individuals looking to increase their enjoyment of life and encourage each other to find great happiness and well-being while doing so.

I live in a suburb of Detroit with my husband, two daughters and our dog, Lucy. In my spare time I enjoy reading and any time spent with family and friends.

I am also (aspiring to be) a Joy Spreader.
