A Day Trip back in Time to the Grosse Pointes

Each of the five Grosse Pointes, (suburbs of Detroit)  has its own unique history and charm. Below are some suggestions for enjoying a great day!

Grosse Pointe Park: Start your tour in the shopping area near LeRouge Bakery at 15215 Kercheval Ave. and try a coffee and croissant. Shops open at 10 a.m. Then, take a drive along Windmill Pointe Drive near Lakepointe Street to check out the Fox Creek Indian Massacre historical marker. Download a Grosse Pointe driving tour.

Grosse Pointe City: Meet for lunch at Side Street Diner at 630 St Clair Ave., in the Village of Grosse Pointe. Explore the historic shopping area called The Village

Grosse Pointe Farms: Stop by the Grosse Pointe History Center at 375 Kercheval (Office open 9:30 – 12, M-F) and 1823 Provencal Weir House across the street to delve deeper into the area’s past.  Visit the Grosse Pointe War Memorial at 32 Lakeshore Drive, a beautiful 1910 mansion, and tour the Grosse Pointe Artist’s gallery and lakeside Trial Gardens.

Grosse Pointe Woods: Start at the 1890 Cook School. Children from Gratiot and Grosse Pointe Townships attended the school until 1922 when the district combined with four others to form the Rural Agricultural School District No. 1. Grosse Pointe Shores: Conclude your tour with a drive down Lakeshore Drive with stunning views of Lake St. Clair and the historic Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Continue your way to visit the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.  Purchase a day pass or make reservations. Learn about the Ford family’s impact on the automotive industry and their contributions to the local community. Visit the gift shop and the restaurant and walk the grounds at 1100 Lake Shore Road Grosse Pointe Shores.
